My Story is Personal

My Story is Personal

“When I found out I was pregnant at age 22, I felt scared, and honestly – and more than a little lost. I couldn’t have done a closed adoption – I needed to know that my baby would be healthy, happy, and safe as she grew up – but I definitely wasn’t ready yet to be a parent. When I learned about open adoption, and especially when met I Geri, I knew in my heart that this was the option for me – for us.

Now 19 years later, I feel very fortunate to have been part of  Brittany’s life as she’s grown into a beautiful, smart, and talented young woman. And as an adult herself now, she and I continue to share in each other’s lives. At the time, the adoption plan that we created was one of the most open that had been created. The adoptive parents and I worked diligently at communication and trust and were careful not to “step on each other’s toes” – we all believed that this was the best way to create a “village” for one amazing little girl.  On my end it came with tough emotions at times, and I called on Geri often for support. Geri has always there when I needed her and to this day I know I could call her if I needed to.

I don’t know if my situation would’ve turned out as well as it did if it wasn’t for Geri herself. Her innate empathy, compassion, dedication, and belief in the benefits of open adoption for everyone are beyond measure. I often think of how fortunate I was to have found such a wonderful person to help me in my time of need then. Geri was truly always there when I needed her – from the smallest question to the most comforting shoulder to lean on during the hardest parts.

My story is personal; and I share it when I have an opportunity because open adoption is a choice that I believe in. Geri gave me that belief, and a wonderful opportunity –  and I am grateful every day.
