PRENATAL CARE

No matter how far along in your pregnancy you are it is important to get regular prenatal care. Whether you have insurance or not, you can get quality medical care to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy.

DRUG & ALCOHOL USE

It is estimated that 6% of women use illegal drugs during their pregnancy. Although the use of illegal drugs is never a part of a healthy pregnancy, Adoptions by Heart understands and has experience working with women who use illegal drugs recreational, or who are addicted to illegal drugs and use throughout their pregnancy.

The American Council for Drug Education provides an information site to learn more about the use of illegal drugs during pregnancy.

Colorado law

  1. If a parent voluntarily delivers a child to a firefighter, or a hospital staff member who engages in the admission, care or treatment of patients, when such firefighter is at a fire station or such hospital staff member is at a hospital, the firefighter or hospital staff member shall, without a court order, take temporary physical custody of the child if:

    a.) The child is seventy two hours old or younger; and
    b.) The parent did not express an intent to return for the child.
  2. If a firefighter or hospital staff member takes temporary physical custody of a child pursuant to subsection (1) of this section, the firefighter or hospital staff member shall:

    a.) Perform any act necessary, in accordance with generally accepted standards of professional practice to protect, preserve, or aid the physical health or safety of the child during the temporary physical custody; and
    b.) Notify a law enforcement officer and the county department of the social services or the abandonment within 24 hours after the abandonment……
  3. 47 states currently support a “Safe Surrender” or “Safe Haven” law that allows a parent or person with lawful custody to surrender a baby confidentially to a Safe Surrender site, without fear of arrest or prosecution for child abandonment.

Safe Haven sites include hospital emergency rooms and state and county fire departments.

POST ADOPTION SUPPORT

ON YOUR FEET FOUNDTION COLORADO

On Your Feet Foundation of Colorado, a new nonprofit (501(C)3) post-placement adoption resource dedicated to helping and inspiring birth mothers after adoption. On Your Feet Foundation’s goal is to empower and support birth mothers post adoption to achieve personal and financial independence by providing them with the tools, training and support they are not able to get elsewhere. By honoring and valuing the loving choice that birth mothers have made to place their children for adoption,On Your Feet Foundation Colorado is able to help these women become more confident, successful and productive in their lives and the world we share.
